I wasn't able to get a really good picture, I realized that I don't have any hoops to wear this over to show off the gown shape. So I took a pic of just the newly finished sleeves. Now I have a potential loaner gown for friends who may need something to wear to faire. </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlNcHPZeqgC6sHKURmA4czn9hxwn0FFwboiyf0Am72yv1hAgqz3bXnHZr2Az6rQHUrGj2Lzd8-leK_0APrmgz8-amjq460y49T3b8pYQLHpczRcnJK1zhR1ybzb5kvPJCPIuGgi7Ha3Y4/s1600/sleeves.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlNcHPZeqgC6sHKURmA4czn9hxwn0FFwboiyf0Am72yv1hAgqz3bXnHZr2Az6rQHUrGj2Lzd8-leK_0APrmgz8-amjq460y49T3b8pYQLHpczRcnJK1zhR1ybzb5kvPJCPIuGgi7Ha3Y4/s1600/sleeves.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Slow progress, but progress none the less. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The sleeve panels are now sewn together. Now to connect them and figure out how to attach them to the gown. I took her out of the garment bag that it's lived in for 2 years and put it on the dress dummy. I don't even have hoops anymore. One of my future projects on this fortnightly adventure. So the skirt is just hanging on the dress dummy mocking me. This challenge is more difficult than I expected. I think I like the idea of just stuffing things in a box and forgetting about them if I don't like them. But I am determined, I am going to finish it and then maybe I'll just give it away or sell it, or keep to loan to the inevitable faire friend that has nothing to wear. </div>

I have a box of unfinished projects, I hate opening the box and reminding myself of those projects. But here is the next challenge and I have at least one project that I really should just finish up. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My Florentine Gown from 2009.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I dove into this gown with a gusto. I researched and sewed my heart out. Then I kind of ran out of steam. I found that the skirt ended up slightly crooked, then I really got lost when I needed to move and I had not completed the sleeves. I wore it to a ball with out the sleeves and briefly to a Renaissance Faire, then into the box it went with every intention of being completed. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then life happened and I pretty much did not sew for almost 2 years. I attempted to take it our in 2013 but ended up still not completing it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So what does it need? Sleeves for the main gown. That's it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7rGxLOqs5ytId52hyFa-48AO0G48epOC2U0oDnxgFz0zeIYBYrhc8ciaR-VIajAOStvFPxSrBsLgVmUtsxe6l_zdDM3wldyhGneFEtIcnjJgAQBn2uDKGZtVz25-QVDV4TKzsPD6Ayr8/s1600/100_0220.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7rGxLOqs5ytId52hyFa-48AO0G48epOC2U0oDnxgFz0zeIYBYrhc8ciaR-VIajAOStvFPxSrBsLgVmUtsxe6l_zdDM3wldyhGneFEtIcnjJgAQBn2uDKGZtVz25-QVDV4TKzsPD6Ayr8/s1600/100_0220.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here it is while it was in progress. My very first dedicated sewing area too. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This makes me happy.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One problem that I am having is that my skill level has changed so much since I started it, I just don't know if I like the gown anymore. But right now the sleeves are cut and pinned, just needing to be sewn together so I am going to work on this and get it completed. Then I can move on. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once I have the gown itself completed then if I still have time left in the 2 week challenge I will complete the partlet and caul to go with it. At the time I even bought an ermine to stuff and decorate as an accessory. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
There were 3 main pieces to put together. I used a heavy quilting thread and a strong needle to get through the layers of buckram.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next step was adding the fashion fabric. This involved a lot of pinning to keep the fabric smooth and tiny little stitches so that you can't see.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I actually enjoyed adding the front piece, once it was sewn along the outside I had to make cute pleats to attach it to the back on the inside. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIx7VG7v8ojw6VATP8h0ZndK6LKsJpE0KTbW-TGNYB7YNT2QMaldokp65Xq_ahwydTTMtqcdvkLFxk_UnsvBIH-otK79XajVSxFYh_7qXKe1ySWa41D4bMVMbmzybe37jYZWnm8FnF8HM/s1600/bonnet7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIx7VG7v8ojw6VATP8h0ZndK6LKsJpE0KTbW-TGNYB7YNT2QMaldokp65Xq_ahwydTTMtqcdvkLFxk_UnsvBIH-otK79XajVSxFYh_7qXKe1ySWa41D4bMVMbmzybe37jYZWnm8FnF8HM/s1600/bonnet7.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Add some flowers. For the time period that I was going for a lot of the decoration was in the inside of the bonnet. I was trying to stick with a budget so I used the flowers I had rather than buying more appropriate ones, but I like how it turned out. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-7YVX_KbE72xJ7cf-3GXOFN-so62UHDNIDUXLLeTooG33SzLfnQDsj_XhuuNS21N7Hg3oNw0XVqx4Pmjm6uGCqN-qAiq9QMBaCOoe6LQhmB5qRN7b5bnBIkK3p7-2H9Km305e59rmU-k/s1600/bonnet8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-7YVX_KbE72xJ7cf-3GXOFN-so62UHDNIDUXLLeTooG33SzLfnQDsj_XhuuNS21N7Hg3oNw0XVqx4Pmjm6uGCqN-qAiq9QMBaCOoe6LQhmB5qRN7b5bnBIkK3p7-2H9Km305e59rmU-k/s1600/bonnet8.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And to tie it more into the gown I added a bit of dark velvet trim. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Ta Da!! My first bonnet!</div>

The next Challenge due April 1, 2014 is Fairytales. Lot's of fun ideas have come up but I have just not been able to find inspiration. So I've decided rather than force something, I am going to work on a different project. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I plan to attend a Titanic Themed Tea in April and I really need something to wear.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So for these two weeks I will be creating a 1912ish tea gown. Here are some inspiration gowns.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFJJCfHywe3oTUUdbdQ72zDWzJr-2VrNWlRYVH_lcLQoD_-xA_LY3w-Q4rYfpOk51UKD0Eq71MjTQz22zpozp1IzYX-f9NGnva463hT6LMQNWk2fdTI5-LG9heLCCdHxYtXHrtLsyH2Ew/s1600/1910gown2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFJJCfHywe3oTUUdbdQ72zDWzJr-2VrNWlRYVH_lcLQoD_-xA_LY3w-Q4rYfpOk51UKD0Eq71MjTQz22zpozp1IzYX-f9NGnva463hT6LMQNWk2fdTI5-LG9heLCCdHxYtXHrtLsyH2Ew/s1600/1910gown2.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love the tiers on this one along with the very feminine pinks.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE846jldgv7dPpHEJPE2-auabkgjMIcq-EJai8WTwz3kD3lePGy_iqzDA2iYwfVn_XFP2ThIP-OSGWJRwrbjlhJArqTZqdk_PsxQUeW68nPv3_3h3Ym1uY96wH16dCXqwLx-OPRVxe31I/s1600/1910gown3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE846jldgv7dPpHEJPE2-auabkgjMIcq-EJai8WTwz3kD3lePGy_iqzDA2iYwfVn_XFP2ThIP-OSGWJRwrbjlhJArqTZqdk_PsxQUeW68nPv3_3h3Ym1uY96wH16dCXqwLx-OPRVxe31I/s1600/1910gown3.jpg" height="400" width="190" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This one is more the actual style I am going to go for on my own gown that I am working on. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuX_fBsImLdaFUimGvuP2sY_LZu-UKBoUTbOyCBeLlxYi-nnpWekGhdepHH8huorYNcseeV2mNQ-oqHBNXm3BCl-7OI8gwW6DpJkxdcG6I27cwv5cdC4iquJu2jDXBN2wY8JbX-7MqUcY/s1600/1910gown.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuX_fBsImLdaFUimGvuP2sY_LZu-UKBoUTbOyCBeLlxYi-nnpWekGhdepHH8huorYNcseeV2mNQ-oqHBNXm3BCl-7OI8gwW6DpJkxdcG6I27cwv5cdC4iquJu2jDXBN2wY8JbX-7MqUcY/s1600/1910gown.jpg" height="400" width="301" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
These would be fun to play with, however I just won't have the time....</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Step 1. Fabric choice: I had some lovely lace and embroidered curtains, I also owned a kitten, these two things did not mix well. So I took the curtains down and saved them, just in case.. It is the lace curtains that will be the over bodice and over skirt. I don't have enough that is not shredded to do more than one layer so my over skirt will be one layer. For the under dress I was determined to not buy new fabric but to use my stash. I found a little over 3 yards of some off white poly satin. Yuck I hate poly now, but at least it will be out of my stash and it should look the part. For the sash I found some dark green shantung. Voila, an idea. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbjvTNCR_TqaqiG_3tliwAGPy-65boRr6DyNRjgmJx4k2ZBAUxqkZmIGSjEGckdPGcFh04POFKm_xM0_b_iSpS2x_YkWlgsnBu2qstTVW3R6vAScdMIbSgzopwWreRK54LGURK4KLC09A/s1600/titanicmockup1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbjvTNCR_TqaqiG_3tliwAGPy-65boRr6DyNRjgmJx4k2ZBAUxqkZmIGSjEGckdPGcFh04POFKm_xM0_b_iSpS2x_YkWlgsnBu2qstTVW3R6vAScdMIbSgzopwWreRK54LGURK4KLC09A/s1600/titanicmockup1.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2anPyTp6OH3tRYWGRHX5fRy9K9U7FkCk_4-LAo8xQTHO3RoZXiIv9mjYlK41fcz-b5Yp7Tw5ZQ5nrFybTAmYValpuOdNfJ4Rg-s-Aje-ewwtHxtPBq9OKf88H3Rb8BMC9e7yr5f39ZRY/s1600/DSC_0189.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2anPyTp6OH3tRYWGRHX5fRy9K9U7FkCk_4-LAo8xQTHO3RoZXiIv9mjYlK41fcz-b5Yp7Tw5ZQ5nrFybTAmYValpuOdNfJ4Rg-s-Aje-ewwtHxtPBq9OKf88H3Rb8BMC9e7yr5f39ZRY/s1600/DSC_0189.JPG" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Step 2. Pattern choice: Well I have the infamous Titanic gown pattern from Simplicity and no time to order a new one so I will be practicing my altering abilities. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKpnbNdNnIDYDPLcp6_KxVwZMnMHxZ2iBbzJA6oZ1nPZqX1mxvZjoN5WgmpdqEJmjeKDB7fb3RIu1JW_b82HlLX7J-T_tAsgGDEiEmuJsrZPLt0Yl43PJEf1wzsQZkYFA4seimGOtOwCI/s1600/Simplicity_8399.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKpnbNdNnIDYDPLcp6_KxVwZMnMHxZ2iBbzJA6oZ1nPZqX1mxvZjoN5WgmpdqEJmjeKDB7fb3RIu1JW_b82HlLX7J-T_tAsgGDEiEmuJsrZPLt0Yl43PJEf1wzsQZkYFA4seimGOtOwCI/s1600/Simplicity_8399.jpg" height="400" width="260" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Step 3. Finding the time: So far I'm chugging along. Megan thinks it's hilarious to sabotage my cutting attempts. I have also decided that the portion of my sewing area that I have for cutting is just too small, time to bring my smaller sewing desk up and to use the large table for cutting and detail work. </div>

Finished the buttons last night. I am happy to have completed this within 2 weeks. I will have to look at adding more details later but for now it looks pretty good. Here are a couple more pictures. I need to iron the skirts and I will need a correct petticoat. It doesn't fit well on m dress dummy but that's okay when I wear it I will get some pictures then. </div>

I ended up working over a weekend so I took a week day off from the day job to relax. My day was spent pretty much sewing and watching Merlin. The results are that I may just finish this Challenge in time for the deadline which is tomorrow. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are some progress shots. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Front view. I practiced my button hole feature on my machine for almost half an hour to make sure I got these spaced properly. I actually do like how the dark velvet plays off of the lighter silk. My one regret is that with the time restraint and my attempt to use stash items as much as possible I really didn't do any embellishments like I would like. I may go back late and add details to the collar and cuffs at least. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">

Side view. I may make this pattern again and change the design of the bottom, I think it could be made to be a lot more fun over all. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Since taking these pics all I have to do is the hand sewing including the buttons, so my Friday night is going to be split between time with my family and time with my sewing. Looking forward to posting the entire outfit. Then all I will need is a proper bonnet or hat.</div>

This project has been pretty slow going. Between running out of canvas for interlining, discovering that I don't have any boning in the sizes that I need, and just constantly being interrupted I am surprised that I am making progress at all. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's the basic body, luckily it fits. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg3axDUZwdUL4MRhyphenhyphenppwaMZbKnN2FIMWEEeemeV8U9Uro4b3RznSclSBMgGXVz8K9z4-cro7JZMHnVKESY2oMCV_xxADXxARt0_QboUAWe3S1xct4TqQL_tx1gdnMuFrpJ8eqH4oNmRHM/s1600/mockup1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg3axDUZwdUL4MRhyphenhyphenppwaMZbKnN2FIMWEEeemeV8U9Uro4b3RznSclSBMgGXVz8K9z4-cro7JZMHnVKESY2oMCV_xxADXxARt0_QboUAWe3S1xct4TqQL_tx1gdnMuFrpJ8eqH4oNmRHM/s1600/mockup1.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Front view, it's on my dummy a little crooked. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikY4Z_M_ipbQm5GRfk2YRWuYuJf9y5YM1obEA1jX6udutOWF5b6gU2-qTgaAyLTPEROsLRJP6E0tUtHYZTzN5g5eWHFjWhj7J60tUSb-1QGEJLl1DnGuh_o7hHEst4RXkrr9Q6rLBhnR8/s1600/mockupback.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikY4Z_M_ipbQm5GRfk2YRWuYuJf9y5YM1obEA1jX6udutOWF5b6gU2-qTgaAyLTPEROsLRJP6E0tUtHYZTzN5g5eWHFjWhj7J60tUSb-1QGEJLl1DnGuh_o7hHEst4RXkrr9Q6rLBhnR8/s1600/mockupback.jpg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Back view. I do love the back details. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As with most of the Truly Victorian Patterns, this one is coming together fairly easily. I just finished up the sleeves and I do think I managed to make them in such a way that they don't actually match what the pattern called for, but they still look pretty good so I'm going to leave them. I just don't have time to fix them if I'm going to actually complete this challenge on time. </div>

Challenge #5 Bodice had many possibilities for me. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Should I finally make my new 16th century bodice? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What about a ballgown bodice? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What events do I plan to attempt to make it to this year? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Well I am planning on attending the Easter Bonnet Promenade again this year in Old Sacramento. My mother in law is very involved and it gives her an opportunity to show off her grandchildren.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I have decided it is time to complete my Bustle ensemble. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNY5-Xwxy81e_jm7hUUg6Ie-XI6EgVmwKwNPK406OSQV0aAA6DLggVES_kcD6rcIuiXLadTlW3lsQTxeSYIA5jkr5D4OALVDm5sJAXoJUs3vuCFCE08lr1deJQHtBozRCa93Omb1CoNu0/s1600/027(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNY5-Xwxy81e_jm7hUUg6Ie-XI6EgVmwKwNPK406OSQV0aAA6DLggVES_kcD6rcIuiXLadTlW3lsQTxeSYIA5jkr5D4OALVDm5sJAXoJUs3vuCFCE08lr1deJQHtBozRCa93Omb1CoNu0/s1600/027(2).JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the skirt and Apron that I have so far, now I need an appropriate Bodice for a Promenade.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I chose another pattern from Truly Victorian TV405</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2pDMwCNEPcHsXzxsv12w0icQn0-Hxt3MJiQ4RuGyKJ3mv6iK23gxMzFjIt3r-yFjbV3Yx1K23HXSkhxuQwhhL8epd7cCH92vMyI9daV7KfGaEYv6ysrhTemo2CEU6WGIP4l7c63V1-6s/s1600/bodice.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2pDMwCNEPcHsXzxsv12w0icQn0-Hxt3MJiQ4RuGyKJ3mv6iK23gxMzFjIt3r-yFjbV3Yx1K23HXSkhxuQwhhL8epd7cCH92vMyI9daV7KfGaEYv6ysrhTemo2CEU6WGIP4l7c63V1-6s/s1600/bodice.jpg" height="284" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I wanted to do the main part of the bodice in the dark velvet, however I used most of that fabric for a pirate coat and pants for my son when he was about 12. So I fell down the rabbit hole that is Pintrest in order to justify the darker color for the vest portion and the lighter color for the body portion. Here are a few of the pictures that I found that I loved!</div>

Actually completed 2 challenges so far in the Historical sew fortnightly. And have worked out a nice little system for sewing with Miss Megan. One problem with this challenge, I don't own any pink fabric. I thought I did, I was sure I owned some peach almost pink linen so I tore my stash apart. I finally found it and it was much closer to orange and using it felt like cheating. In my memory I have some lovely burgundy velveteen with ity bity white flowers on it and I briefly considered using it to make a Spencer. I eventually decided against that project for now. So boxes and boxes of fabric and only a few scraps here and there of ugly pink satin to show for it. So I decided to go to my list of things that I absolutely would like to add to my costume collection this year. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Finally I decided upon new bloomers. Not just any bloomers though; Fancy, Frilly Bloomers. So once again I actually bought fabric instead of using my stash sigh... These bloomers are part of my concept for my Fairytale project as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigK10UFfwml0aFkXnQIblCEkURvsyzqAAxgEe9Noc8RU0s04amKvgdHrrny_ilL2Rut7_J_nxbYuMxmUESzrQGYUI6JnfqIOAsPMu1YEyoCkpBtAM_jojInmJM6rFzPctc26yd4UcyPsI/s1600/frillies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigK10UFfwml0aFkXnQIblCEkURvsyzqAAxgEe9Noc8RU0s04amKvgdHrrny_ilL2Rut7_J_nxbYuMxmUESzrQGYUI6JnfqIOAsPMu1YEyoCkpBtAM_jojInmJM6rFzPctc26yd4UcyPsI/s1600/frillies.jpg" height="640" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
Luckily for me, this pattern is super easy, so hopefully I can just get through this challenge and move on the next one which also involves underwear. I am really hoping to have a full set of Victorian underwear pretty soon. It's going to be pretty difficult to make any other Victorian pieces until I have the proper foundations. </div>

Back view. I only used 5 yards of lacing, I'm going to re-lace with a longer piece before I officially wear this. My husband took the pictures, I think he missed the concept that the picture is about the corset, not about me. There are a lot of projects coming up where he can learn though...</div>

After making changes to my mock up and trying it on again I cut into my actual fabric. I still get a slightly panicky feel when I make that first cut.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFw7UTXCXghOKT_KM10c_0tw93qbfBpS85rYhiwxeyCjBvd-svnt0hBVPdl3PKc-ALpb2bL7sg3Nra_Em1tNRY-RohtGvxKuoa631ZQGXY02gRvTsY09WSASQrk6JJijEJtMcyZcrFECc/s1600/027.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFw7UTXCXghOKT_KM10c_0tw93qbfBpS85rYhiwxeyCjBvd-svnt0hBVPdl3PKc-ALpb2bL7sg3Nra_Em1tNRY-RohtGvxKuoa631ZQGXY02gRvTsY09WSASQrk6JJijEJtMcyZcrFECc/s1600/027.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I made some serious adjustments to the pattern to give more room in the hips and to take out all of the excess in the under bust area. I didn't like the line and the fit with the side piece split in two so I changed that piece as well. It all worked well on the mock up so it was time to get down to business.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The actual construction of this corset went rather quickly. I was determined to use stash items as much as possible so a lot of digging through various baskets, boxes, and various other containers happened. I didn't get nearly enough pictures of the work in progress. Before I knew it I had gotten through two seasons of Once Upon a Time on Netflix and was almost done.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAkUzM0bkUdjPRT4cNMXY3OW6h6e8Ony0-ja_yeVa12LUqS0Px20iYToElJnnkhRVPyZlOYAKxFjfcs2eXdnXw8xc4HCNRacgSoN6L7YsXS3wCW1rSfyI6a7LHy9x_q3TMS08QtM5ddVo/s1600/20140109_182952.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAkUzM0bkUdjPRT4cNMXY3OW6h6e8Ony0-ja_yeVa12LUqS0Px20iYToElJnnkhRVPyZlOYAKxFjfcs2eXdnXw8xc4HCNRacgSoN6L7YsXS3wCW1rSfyI6a7LHy9x_q3TMS08QtM5ddVo/s1600/20140109_182952.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have to say I am rather proud of how quickly I got the busk in. It has been forever since I've sewn a corset and the busk used to scare the heck out of me but with this one I just did it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7wiSzfH78bLRT7DUQ8xRhjISCfV8BPjMRU_wqWKZ8Hzc7ME3UVF-H79D9NFqqOOCFIH9le3Js2ac4WFX7lQWUqL196g-95Yrl1nfAMRCAAWo4xdeZ5p0yAL8inph5tvr31KCo9coqiv8/s1600/20140109_183008.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7wiSzfH78bLRT7DUQ8xRhjISCfV8BPjMRU_wqWKZ8Hzc7ME3UVF-H79D9NFqqOOCFIH9le3Js2ac4WFX7lQWUqL196g-95Yrl1nfAMRCAAWo4xdeZ5p0yAL8inph5tvr31KCo9coqiv8/s1600/20140109_183008.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a><br />
The grommets were a pain though. I still have the hand held grommet setter and I ended up with some sharp edges that I had to file down<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7XL4rU5S2MhSBpJs6-n5HsJwNx9NK3wPtIy7-gIuDo8fkFan32BX7Ywa_LCmA-Tcgd3ukSZWOzWOZ8ShiwMdUGw5P9-TcopCdgT4-4YKuVhxpGiRVoEFGZob6wfkn1ecPiYbgNuGeTKY/s1600/20140109_183014.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7XL4rU5S2MhSBpJs6-n5HsJwNx9NK3wPtIy7-gIuDo8fkFan32BX7Ywa_LCmA-Tcgd3ukSZWOzWOZ8ShiwMdUGw5P9-TcopCdgT4-4YKuVhxpGiRVoEFGZob6wfkn1ecPiYbgNuGeTKY/s1600/20140109_183014.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
There was some slight unevenness around the bottom that I had to cut into a nice shape before I could bind the bottom. But over all it all came together fairly well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKyvFOdmQWag6lqQkzoZxsKEsrvPI1l8oJS9wkdYERZemq7__GfYrw6KBXPm9q-IN8GFnb6fap9pYX3sVKuBEWHPySkRM5MYWTC_ySickCIUAlwPUyaVhco1CkYK7D7saptI9I_k4IeWY/s1600/20140109_190519.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKyvFOdmQWag6lqQkzoZxsKEsrvPI1l8oJS9wkdYERZemq7__GfYrw6KBXPm9q-IN8GFnb6fap9pYX3sVKuBEWHPySkRM5MYWTC_ySickCIUAlwPUyaVhco1CkYK7D7saptI9I_k4IeWY/s1600/20140109_190519.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Digging through my box of odds and ends I found this dark purple bias tape. So I knew exactly what I was binding the bottom with. I had the exact same shade of purple satin ribbon from a baby shower gift that I used for the top along with some vintage lace from my vintage box of lace and trim. Next post will show the completed project.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I can't leave without showing my little helper up to her mischief. Those are her brother's feet in the back ground. He was supposed to be keeping her out of my sewing stuff... I eventually got my measuring tape back.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

During my last fitting I pinned the trouble areas. Then I adjusted the pieces accordingly. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Huge difference in the side. I can not imagine how this would even work, at least not as an underbust.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I ended up pinching the side piece in by over 4 inches. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I marked in a way to stay as true to the general shape as possible. I also marked on the plastic pattern just in case it didn't work so I Could try something different.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
New back with fixes. After this I also added to the hips a bit to get a somewhat straighter line. But based on my original try on, I know my hips will squish into line a bit. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimHHuCaWiX0PMh1AneddxJxcabkm8RBUZSdxIDxwVCjkw9MOph9b6kVw10LwVfAoGW_prvuOFQpj_kFbhwvN4_tVk4Z3nUKUQlRtYLZCK5TbSFrduwj2iUlv1l8nxexkxOGK44yKc66uE/s1600/1910draft2a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimHHuCaWiX0PMh1AneddxJxcabkm8RBUZSdxIDxwVCjkw9MOph9b6kVw10LwVfAoGW_prvuOFQpj_kFbhwvN4_tVk4Z3nUKUQlRtYLZCK5TbSFrduwj2iUlv1l8nxexkxOGK44yKc66uE/s400/1910draft2a.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Much Better!!! Although to be completely honest, I still don't like the pattern as well as I would like. It just feels as if it needs more moving parts. I'm definitely not an expert at corsetry, in fact they really intimidate the heck out of me but this pattern just doesn't impress me. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next step is the plunge into the actual fabric. I'm so hoping that it turns out nice. I must say my system for sewing as a mom is working out really well. I've been binge watching Once Upon a Time with my middle son while my little one plays. I have a lot of interruptions but I'm getting some bonding time at the same time. I'll have to do a post about my sewing area in the future. </div>

With the photography skills of my eldest son I was able to try on my mock up of the 1910 corset. First I had to re-cut my mock up fabric in order to fit my new post-baby body, but being able to cut the pattern smaller was a pretty nifty experience.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Unfortunately mock up #1 had some serious fitting problems. Keep in mind as you look at the pictures that this is an under bust pattern...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQceeHQCft1VVspaqvX-pqneQOA7iAWk5N0JQgLxrEOIaX_TfY6YzELLy_fJ_rC09knjPurkrmSsiC5RvzznewJchJ-SzGGPeFxO1PQp03j5TPtygxowvxMlhiBDUUuZwyqVxtgaAjgaw/s1600/1910fit1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQceeHQCft1VVspaqvX-pqneQOA7iAWk5N0JQgLxrEOIaX_TfY6YzELLy_fJ_rC09knjPurkrmSsiC5RvzznewJchJ-SzGGPeFxO1PQp03j5TPtygxowvxMlhiBDUUuZwyqVxtgaAjgaw/s1600/1910fit1.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Front view. There will be a busk in the front but to mimic it I sewed the front pieces together and inserted some boning to give it shape. As you can see there are "wings" on the sides. I had cut the pattern even smaller than the measurement called for, but it looks as if it is meant for someone with a larger ahem... shelf than what I have.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibGFnpqg7MgHkUuk-eJsahcPCLYtor28yO1c2g40s35ix1N7XKDUbxfpRxZ_Hlu2euezwtv9z0MMg6c39rL9g6e3YrejXTCopr3yqMnkZSTUP0Yhx-vj3GKZkz_NS1iZZeIX6fdjN21IA/s1600/1910fit2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibGFnpqg7MgHkUuk-eJsahcPCLYtor28yO1c2g40s35ix1N7XKDUbxfpRxZ_Hlu2euezwtv9z0MMg6c39rL9g6e3YrejXTCopr3yqMnkZSTUP0Yhx-vj3GKZkz_NS1iZZeIX6fdjN21IA/s1600/1910fit2.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Side view. This is the portion of the pattern that just really isn't working. the side just bulges like crazy.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ4p7xcpPb4ysMr5xcBdMUczDgtsHcqaYjPyG6xnuUltV-4hdBPPXptSHOiLN94rMK_yoQ_kuJFYzA5PUn9rz6qBRQONULFmFWAXi8_Ocw5HK9p64PRNzRG-saLUHnJhf4w-vV_tF4g28/s1600/1910fit3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ4p7xcpPb4ysMr5xcBdMUczDgtsHcqaYjPyG6xnuUltV-4hdBPPXptSHOiLN94rMK_yoQ_kuJFYzA5PUn9rz6qBRQONULFmFWAXi8_Ocw5HK9p64PRNzRG-saLUHnJhf4w-vV_tF4g28/s1600/1910fit3.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Close up of side view, both sides have the identical problem.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOfhvbDSm01mHdWZ6qMwXTcQrXnuOKESI53VJ2O02Hba2K1BAGRwBPmD3X6L4vOBZmfOsQIHh2mZIkGZTbeQ5bQSSGzhlNc8GXGWvdTwhWIld3SwXO4iqjgjO3dlH88Xos_MiD8jISmmA/s1600/1910fit4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOfhvbDSm01mHdWZ6qMwXTcQrXnuOKESI53VJ2O02Hba2K1BAGRwBPmD3X6L4vOBZmfOsQIHh2mZIkGZTbeQ5bQSSGzhlNc8GXGWvdTwhWIld3SwXO4iqjgjO3dlH88Xos_MiD8jISmmA/s1600/1910fit4.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And rear view. Of course my real body is a bit squishier than my dress dummy so I'm used to the back view being a little off.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV593SKLp7_Gi5GmyNRPzIk49FHx9a4wLj20Ug1HjStsvpor9R_MRPVTkGiznghyphenhyphenFE_S5LVk9LsHto2bccPvioQFoOGjh7eZi3z8vlFtlFpGVmVXTlS81HGRpRM85hMW_MiH73NX4_Hzc/s1600/1910fit6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV593SKLp7_Gi5GmyNRPzIk49FHx9a4wLj20Ug1HjStsvpor9R_MRPVTkGiznghyphenhyphenFE_S5LVk9LsHto2bccPvioQFoOGjh7eZi3z8vlFtlFpGVmVXTlS81HGRpRM85hMW_MiH73NX4_Hzc/s1600/1910fit6.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I thought to myself, it can't be right. My real body will squish and so the fit will be different. Sewing my handy dandy lacing strips on to the back and... nope it really was that bad of a fit. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs5vui8aksElbhy_02Zr8J6ecOu-NAC-CjeQIpPnHKSldZcw89SmviXIruSNIZytjfm1pK-kYVGbmYNgyYumGUlHgLVvq6hPgCQrg_x5ZIh-pw8HHQSVIFzd8FQ1sBo01Ke-Z_sjByKyk/s1600/1910fit7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs5vui8aksElbhy_02Zr8J6ecOu-NAC-CjeQIpPnHKSldZcw89SmviXIruSNIZytjfm1pK-kYVGbmYNgyYumGUlHgLVvq6hPgCQrg_x5ZIh-pw8HHQSVIFzd8FQ1sBo01Ke-Z_sjByKyk/s1600/1910fit7.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The back, as I predicted wasn't quite as bad though. I did leave out the front picture that my son took, trust me, it wasn't pretty.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So back to the cutting table. I must say that I am not exactly thrilled with this particular pattern. I almost trashed the whole project in lieu of using one of the patterns from Bridges on the Body. I wasn't that far along in the project after all. But I decided that I will continue on with this one because I want to see if I can over come the issues and see how it comes out. That way it's more of a learning experience for me and for anyone else that may have the same issues and stumbles upon this blog. </div>

Challenge #2 Innovations</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For this challenge I have decided to make the 1910's corset that I had planned in 2012. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I had gotten as far as my mock up and then stopped due to my pregnancy. Now I have lost an additional 25lbs plus all the baby weight so I need to start completely over. I had already purchased all of the materials because my plan had been to complete the corset sew along over at bridges on the body, see <a href="http://bridgesonthebody.blogspot.com/2012/02/1911-all-steps-in-one-place.html">http://bridgesonthebody.blogspot.com/2012/02/1911-all-steps-in-one-place.html</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm still planning on using this as a guide to get me through.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I chose this particular item for innovations because it was such a dramatic shift in the female form in a short amount of time. Throughout much of the 1800's the focus of feminine fashion was to accentuate the hips by reducing the waist. The corsets in the late 1800's into the early 1900's also tended to poof out the breast in order to create an ideal "S" curve. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxDMmT_BQp8S1aESuGLT1fkeeEicQO7md_1ACXLv47Tul-7Qz1kS3d6nQmM5uy9iES6AsPcQmWKunUIpyZ1oefhhEs9_7qv5naMJRLaCHx3KloQX-wvaxVztMbhgQI72d_ZfgYFtUd_rc/s1600/edwardian2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxDMmT_BQp8S1aESuGLT1fkeeEicQO7md_1ACXLv47Tul-7Qz1kS3d6nQmM5uy9iES6AsPcQmWKunUIpyZ1oefhhEs9_7qv5naMJRLaCHx3KloQX-wvaxVztMbhgQI72d_ZfgYFtUd_rc/s400/edwardian2.jpg" height="400" width="203" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
An example of the "S" curve in action.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW-clDFu-DWSndPPMc73xbfKj-m0HwI3B34EDog21Fbyj-roqodznjr_cljPrcrBrdos0XfYZ6OhRzhejS1i6l6FKT8EYI3Ei0S4mSi75fZJY27y_mN-sfJmnqzmRLla2xYFOyLA_m2lI/s1600/edwardian.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW-clDFu-DWSndPPMc73xbfKj-m0HwI3B34EDog21Fbyj-roqodznjr_cljPrcrBrdos0XfYZ6OhRzhejS1i6l6FKT8EYI3Ei0S4mSi75fZJY27y_mN-sfJmnqzmRLla2xYFOyLA_m2lI/s400/edwardian.jpg" height="400" width="278" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Notice the pigeon breast?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then all of a sudden fashion shifted in such a way as to create more of a column out of the female form. The dramatic curves created by the Victorian and Edwardian corsetry were done away with and a new ideal look emerged.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

The foundation for the above fashions were built on a new corset. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am using Reconstructing History's 1910's corset pattern.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I had purchased lavender coutil for this corset as well. Hopefully there will be other challenges in 2014 that I can fit in with making the entire ensemble that I was planning for a Titanic themed event. </div>

Sewing with a 1 yr old helper is quite the adventure. I remember how frustrated I would be when my cat would choose my fabric as his latest bed, or decide to pull the pins out of my pin cushion, or roll in my pattern while chewing on it.... Well here is how helpful little Miss Megan is when it comes to my sewing.</div>

We're done here..</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So the dress fits better than I thought it would. It is a little big, but with babies that's okay because she can grow into it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'll do a post with more of the process, then a photo shoot with the final dress. This is a fun little project to get the creative juices flowing again. </div>
Robin Gallowglashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03989679861568363787noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8671525574480236465.post-9796645324058341012013-12-04T11:30:00.001-08:002013-12-04T11:30:47.559-08:00Progress on the Flour Sack Dress<div style="text-align: center;">
The little dress is coming along nicely. The pattern is fairly easy to follow and the cotton is really nice to work with. It's rougher than the cotton that I am used to, being of a courser weave but that just makes it less slippery.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have to work in 15-20 minute time slots and that's if I'm lucky. Megan has not eaten my pattern as of yet as my old cat would have done, but she is fascinated by my sewing machine and once she notices that I am sewing she is quick to make it over and want into my lap which leads to her wanting to push all of the cool buttons...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Being only one year old she does not have an appreciation for the dress being made for her, just that it is one more thing that is keeping mommy from holding her. That being said, we are making due and it's coming together. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVEgcQ0dAkdQ4D_inXf0ZbuwCeMK_vOSyKvgsYiLT5A-DvyxspBxW23DIA8ayP7oaxTsFLssDCm0SjtH7f8vYKwv-Gj_u7f8hOlAsExmT2uruVAiFC8x5vf4LDFymFfsp9VI9kdUw6gVs/s1600/megandress2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVEgcQ0dAkdQ4D_inXf0ZbuwCeMK_vOSyKvgsYiLT5A-DvyxspBxW23DIA8ayP7oaxTsFLssDCm0SjtH7f8vYKwv-Gj_u7f8hOlAsExmT2uruVAiFC8x5vf4LDFymFfsp9VI9kdUw6gVs/s400/megandress2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I did manage to place the wrong pieces of the pattern on the fold so I had to sew the center and now it has a seam instead of a nice smooth front line. I think it will look okay though. I just have to pay much closure attention to what I'm doing. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnbHahlRLLgFijo_oYuZcza5C6loO-4f9qNTb1GsRkwnHUWXh3vN8vko8V3q158TYBvPdN-tSJR6b_4QtcRUyt8S04OEmQax1imQQ-6wqzhbUOWDSnC32Vc5-xtJ2hQLSPbQSen_arnCE/s1600/lacecollection.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnbHahlRLLgFijo_oYuZcza5C6loO-4f9qNTb1GsRkwnHUWXh3vN8vko8V3q158TYBvPdN-tSJR6b_4QtcRUyt8S04OEmQax1imQQ-6wqzhbUOWDSnC32Vc5-xtJ2hQLSPbQSen_arnCE/s400/lacecollection.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I got a chance to go through my vintage lace collection to find lace for the trim. Decided on a slightly understated lace trim. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I'm about half way done and have spent probably 1 1/2 - 2 hours so far. Now that I have figured out how to spend my sewing time in small chunks while Megan is playing near by, I am getting much more accomplished. I used to throw myself into projects and spend a whole weekend or night on it, but this is allowing me to set a slow and steady pace. I took more pictures of the process with my actual camera, now to find the cord to upload them....</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Flour or Feed Sack dress is something that I had heard of a few times, but had never given much thought to until recently. Once I made up my mind to make one for Megan for Challenge #1 in the 2014 Historical Sew Fortnightly I wanted to research as much as possible. Now my imagination is filled with the images of wives and daughters pestering their husbands and fathers to purchase the right fabric sack with the flour/maza/grain needed for the family.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I own horses so I have an idea of how big a 50lb sack of feed is, it's difficult for me to imagine a time when a family would buy that much and more flour for their home though. I also kind of wish I could buy my horses grain in cotton fabric bags. It would be sticky, but so worth it!<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The use of cotton for flour and feed sacks actually goes back much further than I thought. I had imagined Great Depression/WWII. But in my research I found that the practice of using feed sack cotton for clothing dates back to the 1800's. Basically as soon as mills began producing the cotton at a less expensive rate than either barrels or canvas it was used. It was in the mid 1920's that the feed sack companies realized that they had a market for printed cotton sacks rather than just the white. Prior to that the bags were white with the company label printed in vegetable ink so it could be washed out. My mother says that in cases where the label couldn't be removed it was used for underwear. Which leads my mind to a cute corset idea...<br />
<br />
During and after WWII the use of cotton feed sacks was considered patriotic. There were shortages of just about everything including fabric. So advertisements like these below were meant to gain attention.<br />

<br />
Feed sack fabric did carry a stigma in some ways and in some places as well. It represented rural life often from the south, people who were too poor to be able to buy pre-made clothing or buy bolt fabric. And as with many of these things it is now in high demand. Collectors buy the fabric, the dresses, towels, and quilts that were made with flour sack fabric. There are gowns in museums that may be silk on the outside, but the lining is made of flour sacks. It's all quite interesting. I don't think I'll become a collector or a quilter but it is going to be a fun project to make my own daughter a dress with it's own history to honor the women who made due with what was available to them AND really drove changes within an industry to meet their demands.<br />
<br />
My fabric actually arrived last night so I am hoping to start the project over the holiday. Must be careful not to finish it too early because of the timeline for the challenges. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am so very excited to be participating in the Historical Sew Fortnightly for 2014. Last year was a bust for me sewing wise and so I am wanting to get a good start for 2014. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The first challenge is Make, Do, Mend and I racked my brains on what I could do for it. I have plenty of garments that are going to need fixes here and there but I just couldn't get excited about doing a blog or taking pictures of a few fixed seams and such. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then a picture started going around on Facebook of a Men's shirt being cut and sewn into a little girl's dress. Aha! I thought, perfect! So I started to pester my hubby about donating one of his shirts for me to cut down into a little dress for Megan. As I waited for a shirt I began researching the potential historical techniques for this project. I didn't get very far before I ran into an article about flour sack dresses. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And finally inspiration struck. So I went shopping so that I can make my daughter a flour sack dress as my first project, in honor of the women who made do during The Great Depression up to and beyond WWII, including the women in my own family.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First I would need a 1930's/40's pattern. This is the one I decided upon. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA14m9aYOKnZ_mBfYlbvixwmHj7npuIDhlbgH02mg6Yd8ZLY1r09z-WUDPCfjSjttW1-RnRx3cUxXJQ-DJGjDCo8PRRXm4Q-WEkf_FUsMko_eu6K2najxKGJSFQ7yzAv6yJfwsX0CRKpI/s1600/vintage+dress.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA14m9aYOKnZ_mBfYlbvixwmHj7npuIDhlbgH02mg6Yd8ZLY1r09z-WUDPCfjSjttW1-RnRx3cUxXJQ-DJGjDCo8PRRXm4Q-WEkf_FUsMko_eu6K2najxKGJSFQ7yzAv6yJfwsX0CRKpI/s640/vintage+dress.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love how this time period has little girls being all legs. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am planning on making the dress from the top left as of right now.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next I trolled EBay and Etsy to find authentic Vintage Flour Sack Fabric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO-6ET9l6HP9MQ-qCkM8sIKm7BLSG29i3xqESHz5GTqvGPDh6jk1xC39RW8vf0Xsvy0_vVtGIS9l1jW7vfNAiFKRkJSWaE6qi-9HYOUSE6UK3e57p5tqdkcWSXUbGoxvHHxmhM737dPI8/s1600/flour+sack.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO-6ET9l6HP9MQ-qCkM8sIKm7BLSG29i3xqESHz5GTqvGPDh6jk1xC39RW8vf0Xsvy0_vVtGIS9l1jW7vfNAiFKRkJSWaE6qi-9HYOUSE6UK3e57p5tqdkcWSXUbGoxvHHxmhM737dPI8/s640/flour+sack.JPG" width="476" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is the one I finally decided upon. I couldn't believe how many patterns were available!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My next entry will be on a little bit of the history of the Sack Cloth Dress.</div>
Robin Gallowglashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03989679861568363787noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8671525574480236465.post-79415954213288784872013-11-20T11:36:00.000-08:002013-11-20T11:36:21.790-08:002013 Another Lost Year<div style="text-align: center;">
I remember feeling so optimistic about how much I was going to get done in 2013. My little girl was born in October of 2012 and I apparently had amnesia about how babies rarely allow their mommies to accomplish much of anything. Especially working mommies who are already gone most of the day. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I lovingly set up my sewing area, sorted my fabric stash, and began to plan my new creations...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is now November and I have completed exactly two items and have started one more. I haven't so much as opened this blog for months. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I just got the announcement for the Sew Fortnightly for 2014 with The Dreamstress and I have decided that I am going to participate! Maybe I'll only make small items and maybe not grand ball gowns, but sewing was my one creative outlet and I miss it! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For what it's worth here are the two projects that I actually did complete in 2013:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg50vgmIVb2fH8csHbwQEmuRf4h13GFbZ1hbmacgTz5Qla2gN6cOUXR8AyZb8oIIUFP3B9sTdmohL1KS3Kq4F04IfRfWWNQX-BlUPbvkgknFL1FKm8wAxYSBWMiBof4COFliDAc0eSlnXk/s1600/embroidered+ionar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="316" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg50vgmIVb2fH8csHbwQEmuRf4h13GFbZ1hbmacgTz5Qla2gN6cOUXR8AyZb8oIIUFP3B9sTdmohL1KS3Kq4F04IfRfWWNQX-BlUPbvkgknFL1FKm8wAxYSBWMiBof4COFliDAc0eSlnXk/s320/embroidered+ionar.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I made just the Ionar/Jacket in this picture. He actually drafted his own pattern and sent it to me to use. The gold cord was couched and the embroidery done all by hand. This gentleman wanted to get as close to authentic as possible. I think his look nailed it based on the few references that we have on 16th century Irish fashion I started the work in late 2011, then set it aside. Completed it in time for his event in 2013 but was woefully behind even still. But it turned out wonderfully!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJSpcduFDXMUvP5XeD-vWQa6jVFiWVN6jnEQstnkiZdWAer8uH_S9RnbOacSFTrgcSRAW8OlR5tUBfaAG11jYy8BA-E1wSckj_X9SIvKfGp6-Vp-IPAC5xwZjp4No6bB8VaB86xhfrpV4/s1600/promenade.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJSpcduFDXMUvP5XeD-vWQa6jVFiWVN6jnEQstnkiZdWAer8uH_S9RnbOacSFTrgcSRAW8OlR5tUBfaAG11jYy8BA-E1wSckj_X9SIvKfGp6-Vp-IPAC5xwZjp4No6bB8VaB86xhfrpV4/s320/promenade.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My motley little family at the Easter Bonnet Promenade earlier this year. The skirt is what was completed on a fairly elaborate outfit that I had planned for the event.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used Truly Victorian Pattern TV297 1898 flared Skirt and the linen and trim both came from my stash. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'll have to see what challenges will come up in 2014 that will allow me to complete the Swiss waist, blouse, and jacket that were all planned for this ensemble. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I am excited for the year to come and now Megan will be able to be a little doll for me to dress up. :)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Sigh, I did almost no sewing in 2012. Being pregnant meant that making things for myself was daunting at best. I just couldn't get excited about making anything maternity related. To top it off my hands also decided to swell to a size to rival the Hulk's hands so I just focused on other things. </div>
<div align="center">
That being said I have managed to start 2013 off on the right foot by competing the Ionar I started on a zillion years ago. Here are some pics of the completed project.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7vL7c4i7fAF3QiVoI7OX-rOHG8oPsMtWyiTFEJgHXLSQ8jgrC8gsChZQ8JqsctJDjU6uJl0q-qn7Cs0T_SjQ8s85XFPfFFxl6wcH02h4l3bjCGC1xo_hk161zeznEh7loCZTmCNaGDQY/s1600/20130112_100201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7vL7c4i7fAF3QiVoI7OX-rOHG8oPsMtWyiTFEJgHXLSQ8jgrC8gsChZQ8JqsctJDjU6uJl0q-qn7Cs0T_SjQ8s85XFPfFFxl6wcH02h4l3bjCGC1xo_hk161zeznEh7loCZTmCNaGDQY/s400/20130112_100201.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
Back<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNCDJOLnsahFflDA_BnaoxlMApskHAzkaoay-3W2ZKBxJXXVvkZBXOKun3AAZ4YuALS_mbqmUhKSBa5ekbkPvbCkgbUHU6oSr73zfPL2xdL9vlzSWbuytWwYyXR7uY7bwRuqQ8YAGpPiU/s1600/ionarfront.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNCDJOLnsahFflDA_BnaoxlMApskHAzkaoay-3W2ZKBxJXXVvkZBXOKun3AAZ4YuALS_mbqmUhKSBa5ekbkPvbCkgbUHU6oSr73zfPL2xdL9vlzSWbuytWwYyXR7uY7bwRuqQ8YAGpPiU/s400/ionarfront.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
Front<br />
<br />
The Ionar was made from dark Red Wool, Green Silk for the lining, And fringe for trim. I did the embroidery by hand, although used cord for the gold swirls. The body of the Ionar is one piece, I used the pattern that was sent to me by the gentleman who requested the project. The sleeves include a gusset at the shoulder to help the sleeve fall more forward rather than back. Silk cord is used for the closure on the sleeves as well as the front. I've made several Ionar's over the past several years, but this one required a lot more hand work, so it was more challenging. It's nice to start the new year off with a completed project. </div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">
<br />
In 2012 I also sadly lost my sewing nemesis Khestral. He was deeply loved even though he was evil incarnate. He would eat my patterns, pull my pins out of the cushion and drop them on the floor, curl up in any fabric that remotely looked like it may be for a project, and generally disrupt my sewing activities at his whim. He died and even though sewing was less challenging it just wasn't the same.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgto1rFxL6Ug-MCNcAVWfnuuiTHRJBZtjqO_OJCL9v44tfNj3VuFpxAukiRTbOVJyO4i0dMTerw-ZGDjzIDJSk0hVSE7khC7MHJtp9x0GRt-8zyvtfY_TIN2BN2s12vXKkQ5ILjW5EJX4k/s1600/100_0298.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgto1rFxL6Ug-MCNcAVWfnuuiTHRJBZtjqO_OJCL9v44tfNj3VuFpxAukiRTbOVJyO4i0dMTerw-ZGDjzIDJSk0hVSE7khC7MHJtp9x0GRt-8zyvtfY_TIN2BN2s12vXKkQ5ILjW5EJX4k/s320/100_0298.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This basket by the way was holding all of my sewing "gadgets"<br />
<br />
Now with 2013 I have a new sewing Nemesis. Her name is Megan. Oh she may look cute now and she can't quite get to my patterns to eat them, but she has the psychic ability that most babies have with regards to mommy needing to get things done. In fact as I was writing this blog I was called away no less than 3 different times for diaper changes, feedings, and cute baby snuggle time. On the plus side, making baby sized historic clothes is going to be awesome and as she gets older I shall make us disgustingly cute matchy outfits complete with any number of accessories such as bonnets.<br />

Well, 2012 has been full of surprises and I have managed to pretty much not sew anything all year. Between my pregnancy, extra time at work to train someone for my position for maternity leave, and a case of severely swollen hands and feet (no joke, I had hulk feet), oh and another move, I never even managed to make myself maternity clothes or a baby blanket for the newly arrived Megan Elizabeth who made her appearance 10/17/2012.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That being said, I am happy to say that in spite of a new born who seems to make her awake time exactly when I sit down to get anything done, I have completed the hand work on the Ionar I started forever ago. Here are some pics. In keeping with tradition, my newest camera has gone missing so I have to post cruddy camera phone pics. Sigh... I think I know where to find the camera this time though. Looking forward to 2013, and sewing again. There is a fantasy fair in April and I am thinking of either a Queen of Hearts with Megan as a hedgehog, or me as Little Bo Peep and Megan as a lamb... </div>
